Ernst Leyden can rightly be called the painter of Urk. In 1919 he left for the remote island to create work in his own studio. The rough, but warm-hearted fishing population managed to bring him to free imagination in all their austerity. During his lifetime already famous painter and world traveler, he made his most appealing work at Urk at a young age. Several guests were inspired here. Experience the atmosphere of the harsh island life in the expressionist Urk works that Leyden and his guests made.
